We specialize in the administration of self-directed retirement plans, including IRAs (both Traditional and Roth), SEP-IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k)s and other qualified plans.

  • The IRS allows an IRA, Individual 401(k), HSA, or ESA to acquire private equity (an ownership interest in a private company) as an asset without penalty, and while keeping the tax benefits associated with that account type.
  • Investing in private equity as an asset in your self-directed IRA is one way to diversify your retirement portfolio.
  • Unlike publicly traded securities, private equity does not have public disclosure laws associated with it.
    • Therefore, the investor can use her or his personal knowledge and experience when investing in private companies or investing in private equity through a self-directed IRA.
  • The returns from a private equity investment can generate retirement wealth that is tax-deferred or tax-free.
  • The IRA ownership of private equity is usually expressed in a percentage of ownership or shares of stock.
  • Few IRA providers allow account holders to purchase private equity, but New Direction IRA provides exceptional administrative services for all private equity investment opportunities.
  • You, the IRA holder, select a company in which you’d like to invest.
  • You agree on the terms with the company, and direct us to send money from your IRA to close the deal.
  • We make sure the paperwork substantiates that the private equity investment is done through your IRA, and therefore deserves the tax benefits associated with the account type.

What is an Angel Investor?

Originally, the term “angel” was coined to refer to the people who financed Broadway plays when all else failed. Today this term has become common among the investment community to refer to a high net-worth individual that invests their own personal funds in various businesses. In the US, it is estimated that there are well over 250,000 active angel investors that annually invest approximately $20 billion in American businesses. In 2003, over 42,000 businesses in the United States received angel financing (it is believed this number is much higher as many of these investments go unreported). This represents roughly 7% of what the banks are investing. As well, statistics show that this figure trumps that of venture capital lending and as much as 30 to 40 times more angel capital is invested annually than venture capital. Some estimate that angel investments have financed approximately twice as many firms as any other form of external equity investment, including institutional venture capital.

The MIT Entrepreneurship Center conducted a study in 2000 on Angel Investors called the “Venture Support System Project: Angel Investors,” and found that these individuals fall into four categories. They are:

  • Guardian Angels, who bring both entrepreneurial and industry expertise. Many have been successful entrepreneurs in the same sector as the new companies they back.
  • Entrepreneur Angels, who have experience starting companies but come from different industry sectors.
  • Operational Angels, , who bring industry experience and expertise, but generally from large, established companies, and may lack first-hand experience with the travails of a startup.
  • Financial Angels, who typically invest purely for the financial return.

All are present within today’s angel organizations, but many group form around similar types of investors. Some groups have arisen out of industry trade associations, while others have started from a cadre of professionals with shared interests.
